Abstract
In a global world, even students majoring in Chinese are expected to be familiar with foreign languages and intercultural research approaches. But what kind of English courses and materials are necessary for students majoring in Chinese literature? Is “Sinology” or “Chinese studies” their concern? How can students connect their knowledge of Chinese literature to the Western Sinologist perspective? My project will focus on “English for Chinese Studies,” course offered by the Department of Chinese Literature at NTHU. This course is not merely composed of grammar exercises or vocabulary tests. Rather, students are expected to improve their reading and comprehension ability in this course. Two objectives are especially emphasized: close reading and translation exercises. For close reading, I mean that students are expected to have a thorough understanding of English articles on Chinese studies. I will also initiate students to practice English-Chinese translation in order to ask students to reflect the nuances of these two languages.
