Abstract
This chapter proposes an economic pressure solution methodology for wall-bounded large eddy simulation (LES). LES is often used as a tool to study turbulent flows where traditional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) methods fail to give reasonable results. One of the principal challenges in LES is the near wall treatment of wall-bounded flows. Structure of turbulent flow in a boundary layer can become very complex in the near wall region, and the grid points required to resolve it increase dramatically in tandem with the Reynolds number. In the methodology presented in this chapter, pressure is assumed to remain uniform in the wall-normal direction within a predefined region, a condition similar to that exists inside the boundary layer. The computational cost of the pressure Poisson equation is dramatically lessened with the approach. The performance of this approach is scrutinized by simulating fully developed channel flows at different Reynolds number and the rotor-stator flows and contrasting the predicted results with available direct numerical simulation (DNS) and experimental data. © 1996 Elsevier B.V.
