Abstract

Capacitive Electronic skin Resistive Tactile sensor Engineering (all) Materials Science (all)
Great attention has been paid over the past decade to mimicking the tactile sense of human skin. Novel materials and device designs, as well the use of various integrated components, have enabled increased functions of tactile sensors. Nowadays, the capability of state-of-the-art tactile sensors has exceeded that of human skin and has been integrated with multiple functions. In this chapter, we provide a general introduction and concepts about the basic operation of tactile sensors based on both resistive and capacitive structures. We also examine materials designs and related fabrication techniques. Finally, we discuss current challenges and future research directions.
