This paper proposes an integrated-service protocol for high speed local and metropolitan ring networks to provide both connection-oriented and connectionless services, such as data, voice, facsimile, and video. The protocol dynamically and fully distributively allocates the bandwidth among different services with a simple control mechanism. The protocol takes both the advantage of slotted ring protocols to have excellent mean data delay performance and the advantage of destination-release to have excellent total throughput performance. The protocol divides time into frames, each of which consists of a synchronous cycle to support connection-oriented service and an asynchronous cycle to support connectionless service. By properly choosing the frame length, the protocol satisfies the bounded delay requirement of voice traffic as connection-oriented service. A fraction of bandwidth can be reserved for users of connectionless service by properly controlling the number of call connections. A reservation mechanism is provided for urgent data packets to be transmitted with a minimum delay in any case. Simulation results show that the faster the network speed is, the more excellent the performance of the protocol is.
