This paper attempts to develop a new PWM scheme for the hybrid cascaded converter based STATCOM, on the basis of phase-shifted PWM. Different from the conventional phase-shifted PWM, the proposed PWM scheme appropriately shifts the carrier phase among the switching legs to optimize the harmonic elimination, which is thus given a name phase-shifted-among-legs PWM in this paper. Detailed mathematical derivation clarifies the effectiveness of the proposed PWM scheme, and laboratory test results verify its feasibility.
