Abstract

This paper presents a flexible microelectrode array integrated with a single-chip system enabling each electrode both to record and to stimulate neural activity. A novel approach to reducing stimulation artifacts by confining stimulation currents in two adjacent electrodes is designed and verified. In addition, the functionality of the single-chip system is tested by both electrical measurements and biological experiments. Experimental results indicate that the active, flexible microelectrode array will be capable of interfacing with neurons bidirectionally and reliably. ©2009 IEEE.
