Abstract
In this work, we use an analytical method developed in [1] to determine the joint distribution of the energy and delay of a transmitted data packet for wireless networks utilizing the IEEE 802.11 standard for medium access control. Our analysis takes into account the effect of the channel noise on the transmission of the RTS, CTS, Data, and ACK packets. Furthermore, by increasing the energy level per coded bit due to previous failure transmission attempts, both throughput and energy efficiency are improved significantly. Finally, channel coding is incorporated in the numerical results by using Reed-Solomon codes and convolutional codes. © 2005 IEEE.
