Adaptive learning is a promising approach to education, in which instructional methods and materials are selected according to the performance of students. In this manner, the learning process can be tailored to the needs and strengths of students in order to maximize efficiency. Advances in internet technology and portable devices has led to the development of e-learning platforms outside the traditional classroom. Nonetheless, monitoring the development of students without the presence of an actual teacher can be difficult. In this study, we propose a novel system by which to adapt teaching materials based on the continuous brainwaves generated by students as they study. In experiments, we recorded electroencephalogram (EEG) signals from students watching educational videos on Vietnamese language instruction. After the program, each student was given an exam to evaluate their learning results. Important features related to learning performance were extracted from the EEG signals, for use as factors in the adjustment of instructional methods and/or materials. Our results demonstrate the efficacy of using EEG signals in neuro-feedback systems aimed at the development of learner-specific instruction systems.
