Abstract

Appearance-Related Product

Design prototype evaluation is a key process in new product development. The evaluation resultsoften serve as a valuable input for identifying necessary design modifications. For products thatmight alter the appearances of their users such as facial accessories, the characteristics of theseusers are as important as the design features. This paper proposes a product evaluation scheme thatintegrates design features and user characteristics in one evaluation process. The scheme is designedas a Kansei-based study and carried out in the form of a factorial experiment. In this paper, in particular, we implement the scheme to evaluate the design prototype of glasses frames. The prototypes are generated as 3D models. In addition, we utilize 3D Face Scan technology to capturethe facial features of users and produce realistic 3D face models. The reconstructed face modelsallow us to post-process individual facial feature without altering the others. In our case, we canmanipulate the distance and orientation between two eyes while keeping the other facial featuresintact, e.g. facial shapes. In the experiment, the participants are required to response on threeaffective measures related to personality attributes: confidence, friendliness, and attractiveness,signified by the faces wearing the factorized glasses frames. The results show that changing certaindesign features indeed influences the impressions of the faces with varied facial characteristics. The proposed scheme can be employed to facilitate the design of products related to personalappearance.
