The effects of heavy metal toxicity on humans are detrimental. Exposure to these high density transition metals like mercury, lead, chromium and so on beyond tolerable limits can lead to failure of the neurological, gastrointestinal, respiratory systems; in most cases cancer. This report demonstrates development of a bio-sensor to measure concentration of chromium(III) in ground water samples with a detection limit of 10 -13 M and a response time often minutes. The sensor gives best sensitivity in a pH range of 3-5. However, the calibration curve is maintained at neutral pH and hence sample can be tested without pre-treatment. Seamless integration of FET with electronic device manufacturing and simple user-interface is another advantage of the easy-to-use sensor which makes it convenient to manufacture and ideal for daily use.
