Abstract
The dechlorination of chlorinated hydrocarbons by Si(O) in the presence of heavy metals was studied to understand the feasibility of coupled reduction of chlorinated hydrocarbons and heavy metal ions. A complete dechlorination of CCl 4 was observed within 10 min at pH 8.5. Addition of heavy metal ions including Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) lowered the production rate of hydrogen gas and dechlorination efficiency of CCl 4 , due to the competition of active sites between CCl 4 and metal ions. However, Ni(II) promoted the dechlorination efficiency and rate of tetrachloroethylene. XPS and ICP-MS results showed that Ni(II) was transformed to zero-valent metal to enhance the dechlorination of chlorinated hydrocarbons.
