Abstract
Language learning is long-term process and learners’ motivation and engagement tend to decrease especially when the learning process continues over an extended period of time. How to maintain EFL learners’ motivation and keep them engaged throughout the long-term learning process has been a pedagogical challenge and research issue. Acquiring knowledge of Phonics is considered the first milestone of English learning for young EFL learners, and phonic knowledge and phonological awareness has been reported to be beneficial for later development of vocabulary acquisition, oral ability, reading literacy, and listening. Therefore, this study aims to incorporate game elements (goals, instant feedback, and competition) to design and develop an interactive phonic game (Phonic Fun) for young EFL learners. The game-based approach is theoretically suitable for producing engaging and motivating digital instructional content for that supports long-term language learning process.
