Abstract
Understanding of the solidification curves, i.e. the solidification sequences and the solid fractions versus temperatures during solidification, is crucial for the control of casting processes. The solidification curve of the 7075 alloy was determined by using a proposed DTA coupled with the mathematical modeling method. When applying this method, the cooling curve of the 7075 alloy was first determined by using DTA, then mathematical modeling was used to simulate this cooling curve, and the solidification curve of the 7075 alloy was thus calculated. This determined solidification curve of 7075 alloy was compared with the results determined by two other methods, the conventional quenching and image analysis method, and calculation with simplistic solidification models. Advantages of this proposed method are discussed.
