Abstract

ACEOF Bacteria DEP Microfluidic SERS Bioengineering Chemical Engineering (miscellaneous)
This study proposes a microfluidic device to selectively concentrate bacteria and SERS particles (silver iodide coated nano-mushrooms, AgINMs) but not blood cells in a three dimensional manner from whole blood through the synergic effects of alternating current electroosmotic flow (ACEOF) and dielectrophoresis (DEP), which can provide a great enhancement on Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectrums to detect bacteria on the chip. E. coli and AgINMs are in situ concentrated by DEP and ACEO forces generated from the top and bottom indium tin oxide (ITO)-coated glasses to increase 3 orders of bacteria SERS signals as shown in Figure 1. This significant concentration not only increase the signal but also provide a selection ways to rule out blood cells to reduce background noise for rapid identified of bacteria via SERS.
