INFLUENCES OF ALLOYING ELEMENTS ON THE HIGH TEMPERATURE OXIDATION OF Fe-Al-Mn-C ALLOYS.

Abstract

Alloy compositions in the Fe-Al-Mn base system with different Mn and Cr contents are employed to investigate the high temperature oxidation at both 800 degree C and 1000 degree C in dry atmospheric air. Phases present after oxidation are identified by the X-ray diffraction and morphology and elemental redistribution in the oxide scales are obtained with an electron microprobe. For alloys with low Mn contents, Fe//2O//3, Mn//2O//3 and Mn//3O//4 are formed by the outward diffusion of Fe and Mn, and are located outside the Al//2O//3 layer. The addition of manganese has a detrimental effect on the oxidation. For the alloy with 3 percent Cr contents, the formation of Al//2O//3 layer is enhanced.
