Access to the Internet via personal communication system (PCS) is expected to become a vital part of future wireless operators’ service offerings. In addition, the World Wide Web (WWW) has become the most important application and service over the Internet. The Internet and WWW are very critical, so that users hope to enjoy all kinds of services in the Internet any where and in anytime. One of the greatest limitations to that goal, however, is finite power supply. Since batteries provide limited power, a general constraint of wireless communication is the short continuous operation time of mobile devices. In this chapter, we propose a realizable energy efficient extension of hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) for web browsing. The chapter explains the energy efficient issues of the HTTP/1.1, and proposes an energy efficient extension of HTTP/1.1. Performance of the proposed extension is analyzed in terms of the factor of power reduction. This study also demonstrates a referable methodology to propose and analyze an energy efficient protocol of application layer, which can promote the technology of power-aware communication, computing, and networking.
