Abstract
This article examines the utility and applicability of chaos theory in technological change. Using data collected from the USPTO, we develop and find a theoretically-based chaotic model of the change process in panel display technology. We draw from our findings a set of propositions, which are tested through a retrospective case study. Based upon this pattern-matching approach, we conclude that chaos theory can be useful in describing change processes in technology.
