Abstract
Two alloys in the Fe-Mn-Al system with different Cr contents are employed to investigate the high temperature oxidation at both 800 degree C and 1000 degree C in dry atmospheric air. The possible phases present after oxidation are identified by the X-ray diffraction method. The morphology and elemental redistribution in the oxide scale are obtained with a computerized electron microprobe. Protective alpha -Al//2O//3 is formed on the alloy with composition Fe-31Mn-9Al-0. 9C-3Cr as a near continuous internal layer along the boundary between oxides and alloy matrix. There is a negative effect on oxidation resistance at 1000 degree C when Cr content is increased to 6%.
