Abstract
We report a microvortex manipulator (MVM) that is a passive, and easily scal-able platform with great potential for the manipulation and separation of particles and cells in microfluidic environments. The movement of particles is determined by a unique combination of vortex flow, buoyancy and gravity forces. We exploit the behavior of particles in MVM, theoretically illustrate the mechanism of our tech-nique and experimentally demonstrate its applications in focusing, guiding and sort-ing particles in microchannels. © 2008 CBMS.
