Abstract

Combustor Swirl Turbulence model Space and Planetary Science Aerospace Engineering
The present study concerns with simulating turbulent swirling flows inside a dump combustor model by eddy viscosity model and Reynolds stress transport model variants with linear and quadratic form of the pressurestrain models. Flows with the same swirl number but with different inlet swirl velocity profiles, forced and free vortex type, were investigated. While the preliminary computations of the non-swirling case indicated that the quadratic pressure-strain model predicted the best results in terms of mean and turbulence quantities compared to the measurements, simulations for the swirling cases showed that a variant of the stress model with linear pressure-strain model, which includes convection term in the pressure strain process, performed best. Detail comparisons of the predicted results and measurements were presented to assess the merits of model variants. The integral axial momentum developments were also used to examine the effect of inlet swirl profiles on the combustor flow development.
