Abstract
One of the crucial constraints for designing a deployment and routing strategy of wireless sensor networks is the limited battery capacity. To achieve energy-efficiency, clustering and cluster-head selection have drawn a lot of research interest recently. In this paper, we propose a novel topology-dependent clustering and cluster-head selection scheme based on the hexagonal tessellation. This new scheme will fairly distribute the cluster-head duties and evenly distribute the cluster heads over the network coverage area. The simulation results show that our proposed method greatly outperform a popular method, namely the LEACH algorithm. © 2010 IEEE.
