Abstract
Thermodynamic models for the various phases in the Al-rich corner of the Al-Li-Cu system were developed using the limited thermodynamic and phase equilibrium data available in the literature. These models were used to calculate the ternary phase diagram, which provided guidelines for carrying out key experimental determinations of the phase diagram. Using the calculated phase diagram, a computational scheme was developed to predict the solidification path of any Al-rich Al-Li-Cu alloy using the Scheil model. The experimental phase equilibrium data being obtained in the Al-rich corner of Al-Li-Cu will be used to optimize the thermodynamic models and refine the calculations for solidification paths.
