Abstract

Mechanical Engineering
We describe a technique by which ultrasonic waves can be generated and detected with picosecond time-resolution. These waves can be used to probe the mechanical properties of nanostructures of thickness down to at least 10 nm. We give examples of the use of these techniques to study the sound velocity and attenuation in thin films, the bonding between films within a structure, and the vibrations of laterally patterned and multi layer structures.
