Abstract
A concept for designing the pixel structure of IPS-TFT-LCDs was studied. First, For the design of IPS-TFT-LCDs, we introduced three additionally important parameters in addition to parameters for conventional TN-TFT-LCDs. The three parameters are the thickness of the liquid crystal layer(cell gap), the distance between neighboring interdigital electrodes, and the width of each interdigital electrode. Second, a holding ratio characteristic which is specific to the IPS mode was discussed. When the resistivity of the liquid crystal mixture is low, a high holding ratio can be kept in the IPS mode. Because of this, there is the possibility that liquid crystal compounds containing a strong polar substituent such as a cyano substituent can be used as a component of a liquid crystal mixture. Based on this concept, both electrode parameters, i.e. gaps and widths etc., and liquid crystal material parameters are newly optimized.
