Abstract

Bendable DMFC PDMS Chemistry (all) Bioengineering Chemical Engineering (miscellaneous) Control and Systems Engineering
In this paper, we designed and fabricated a polymer-based bendable direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) for wearable applications. This device consisted of membrane electrode assembly (MEA), polymer-based micro channels for the fuel and aluminum electrode. The MEA was fabricated by sandwiching a Nafion membrane between the anode and the cathode, on which 40% Pt-Ru/C and Pt/C catalyst layer was sprayed on, respectively. Catalyst loading on the electrodes was 1 mg/cm . The structure of anode field channel plate was serpentine type and manufactured by molding process. The single cell test indicated the PDMS-based fuel cell can provide 5.94 mW, 6.8 mW and 7.8 mW, respectively when it in a flat state and bending state (2 inch and 1 inch radius of curvature) at air-breathing mode operation.
