Abstract
The adhesion profiles of bacteria and polymorphonuclear (PMN) leukocytes on poly(ehterurethane urea) surfaces and the evolution of complement activation and PMN degranulation over time were investigated. Results confirmed that the persistence of adherent bacteria even at high levels of shear stress in the early phase of implant infection is due to the inability of polymorphonuclear (PMN) leukocytes to adhere to the biomaterial surface in spite of sufficient activation.
