Abstract

Green component management;RoHS;WEEE

This research is conducted to build a public information platform to facilitate connections within companies and automate the validation of green component or product online. By accessing the platform, both buyers and suppliers can transfer and request the components and products information and form unified XML files. Further, the supplier and buyer information can be obtained through the platform. International interest in ecology consciousness is increasing rapidly. After enforcement of RoHS and WEEE, electronic and electrical industries will have to face huge impact on product design, manufacturing, marketing and the entire supply chain. Legally, RoHS and WEEE are applied within the EU only; however, RoHS and WEEE are fast becoming a world-wide reference for green compliance altering due to the global nature of electronic and electrical industries. Similar environmental legislations are also being considered in a number of countries outside the EU. Innumerable small and medium-sized electronic manufacturers in countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, Taiwan and China have been slow to adopt the Directives' requirements. Concerning the risk of losing customers, they now face the challenges of product and production applications in line with EU requirements. The same firms are also likely to supply companies in Japan, which has recently enacted its own stringent recycling legislation. SONY (Japan) has set its own regulation, limiting the use of Pb, known as SS-00259. Companies today have two options. They can sit back and wait to be regulated in ways that they may have hard time to comply. On the other hand, they can engage in a dialogue to understand the issues and develop green solutions that are sustainable for the communities and for business. This study helps companies reduce time and cost by integrating validation and information transaction on a public green component platform.
