Abstract
The purposes of this study are to describe psychosocial development of Taiwanese university students and to compare them with the content of a psychosocial development theory (PSD) proposed by Chickering and Reisser (1993). Thirty male and thirty female students from six universities in Taiwan participate in this study. A phenomenological qualitative data analysis of 60 in-depth interviews is conducted. The themes emerged from data analysis include students’ intellectual development, interpersonal competence development, autonomy and independence, tolerance with differences, purpose development, value pursuit, self-identity and development affected by environmental influences. Counseling, student affairs, and education professionals could employ the themes and elements revealed in this study to provide effective treatment and services to assist psychosocial development of undergraduates grow and develop over the journey of university career in Taiwan.
