Abstract
Shuffle-exchange networks (SENs) are among the most extensively adopted multistage interconnection networks (MINs) due to their uncomplicated configuration. This study measures terminal, broadcast, and network reliability of SENs using Monte Carlo estimation on modern computer technology. The Monte Carlo method has been demonstrated to be a better estimation method than the inaccurate mathematical formulae of the 8×8 SEN+2 for the reliability performances proposed by Gunawan. The reliability of the 8×8 SEN, the 8×8 SEN with one additional stage (SEN+), the 8×8 SEN with two additional stages (SEN+2), and the 8×8 SEN with three additional stages (SEN+3), are re-evaluated using the proposed Monte Carlo method and the final estimation results are analyzed. According to the estimation results, the SEN+ design is adequate if the reliability of SEs is relatively high (≥0.95). Otherwise, the SEN+2 design should be chosen to achieve high reliability.
