Abstract

The physical properties of the RuO 2 Nanowires (NW) and epitaxial relationship and electronic structures of the RuO 2 /TiO 2 core/shell structure synthesized by reactive sputtering were investigated. The mechanical, optical, electrical properties, and photocatalyst response to Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation were characterized. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image of RuO 2 NWs indicated a high density of uniformity in the NWs, which were several micrometers long. X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectrum confirmed that the phase of the NWs was rutile-structured RuO 2 , with lattice-constant values of a=0.45 nm and c=0.31 nm. It was also observed that the morphology of the NWs remained same, while the sizes increased after deposition of a thin TiO 2 layer through reactive sputtering deposition. The electronic and chemical structures of the NWs were also examined by electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS).
