Abstract

In the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) light is emitted from Na overlayers on Cu(111). This emission is due to (a) inelastic tunneling into quantum well states of the Na layer and (b) transitions between these quantum well states. Experimental observations and model calculations for 3 ML Na on Cu(111) are presented.
