Abstract
Complex quasi-periodic nano- And micro- structures are finding increased importance in diverse fields. Metal wrinkles have potential applications in: molecular detection, optical devices, and high-surface area conductors. We present a simple and ultra-rapid technique to controllably create complex nano- To micro- scale metal wrinkles on the polystyrene (PS) children's toy Shrinky-Dinks. We are uniquely able to create wrinkles with a large range of wavelengths. The wrinkles also have adjustable periodicity, directionality, aspect ratios, anisotropy and even patterns. Finally, we demonstrate the utility of these patterns, for applications from photonics to cell fate studies. © 2008 CBMS.
