Abstract

This study investigated the feasibility of using piston compressed air engines in four stroke internal combustion (IC) engines for regenerative braking application. First, thermodynamic and gas dynamic simulation models were developed to analyze the engine cylinder pressure and recycle pressure in the storage tank during operation. Commercially available software (MATLAB) was used to develop the simulation models. Second, a 100 cm3 IC engine was modified for compressed air operation to examine recycle pressure and fluid properties under various cranking torques and buffer volumes during regenerative braking. The experimental results revealed that the maximum regenerative pressure of the four stroke regenerative braking was 2.91 bar.
