Abstract

avatars;players’ behaviors
Previous studies have shown that avatars’ physical appearance and traits influence players’ behaviors in the virtual world. Moreover, people tend to choose virtual characters that are similar to their own appearance or personal traits. However, there are few studies examining the effects from the other side, that is, studies which explore the phenomena and effects when the selection of avatars is not based on free will. In a situation where the players do not like their avatars, will they behave in accordance with the traits of their avatars? This study will examine how players’ perceptions and behaviors are influenced by their avatars’ appearance and personality in two conditions: idealized or non-idealized avatar. The research results will be able to provide implications for virtual world avatar design.
