In this paper, a traffic descriptor is proposed to describe a Gaussian input process, including self-similar Gaussian process. This descriptor is then used to describe a generic stochastic input process through Gaussian approximation in a high-speed multimedia network which employs leaky bucket shapers and scheduling servers to guarantee the quality of service, including the most important items of bandwidth assignment, data loss probability and per connection end-to-end delay. The information contained in the descriptor is sufficient to calculate all parameters required in the service- guaranteed network. And, a bandwidth assignment algorithm is proposed in conjunction with the proposed traffic descriptor to calculate the required bandwidth of a new call in a guaranteed service network. Based on the results in above, a call admission control algorithm will be developed to improve the quality of service in service guaranteed networks in the future.
