Abstract
Carnivorous pitcher plants of the genus <I>Nepenthes</I> have evolved specialized leaves adapting the purpose of attracting, capturing, retaining and digesting the preys, mostly insects. Different capturing mechanisms have been proposed and discussed from previous works. Here, we focus on the most important capture mechanism which based on special surface properties of the peristome and insert “aquaplaning”. Combination of surface microstructure and nectar secretions interacting with water film results in an amazing trapping system. Two species, <I>Nepenthes × <I>Miranda</I> </I>and <I>Nepenthes</I> × <I>Ventrata</I></I>, were investigated. Surface morphology and microstructure were characterized by SEM and AFM. Chemical compositions of waxy layer were determined by FTIR. Contact angle measurement and dynamic sessile drop method were performed to determine the wettability under dry and wet conditions. Capture mechanisms for different species under varying humidity were discussed and compared.
