Abstract
The purpose of this study is to provide an analysis model through the information contained in the related topic in original papers, pioneering patents, and the interconnection between them. Organic light emitting diodes (OLED) was chosen as an example. The results are as follows. (1) Most of the current OLED techniques, classified according to International Classification (ICL) of patents, are on either initial or growing stages. Thus, there is still plenty room for further development. (2) In OLED techniques, the main streams of patent that has been granted belonged to ICL H05B 33/00, H05B 33/14, and C09K 11/06. Cares need to be taken to avoid patent infringement. (3) In recent years, there is a growing trend of the number of papers and patents on small molecular OLED at Taiwan. (4) In physics related topic of OLED, the growing trend of paper numbers in the representative journal, Applied Physics Letters, is consistent with that of patent numbers. (5) In these years, there is quite a few number of paper in OLED originated from Taiwan, both in physics and material. The performance of Taiwan is superior to Korea. (6) White light is obviously the main stream of OLED development. It is more related to physics rather than material. (7) The developing trend of the Idemitsu Kosan Corporation is towards blue light and white light. (8) Top-emitting is one of the developing trends in OLED techniques. Above results imply that there are high-level OLED related technical people in Taiwan, which provides the necessary strength to develop the OLED industry in Taiwan.
