Abstract
With the development of technology and the changes in lifestyle, people are increasingly demanding about the quality of products in their lives and living environment. The fundamentals of lighting before were only related to the quantity of light that was to provide light for people to see and cope in the visual environment also during the dark hours. Due to the development of light sources and lighting equipment, people have more choice on lighting equipment that is not only adequate in terms of quantity, but also meets the lighting quality demands. Today, LEDs are entering the lighting market and as new light sources, they enable new approaches to lighting design and practice. LEDs introduce new possibilities for tuning the color of light. Compared to conventional light sources, they are small in size giving also freedom for luminaire design to meet the users’ demands. This study attempts to discuss if the changes to the color and brightness of lighting could affect users’ pleasantness of the visual environment. And also find out the psychological sense under different lighting surroundings. By realizing the feeling that each lighting condition brings to the users, lighting designers can provide proper lighting designs that precisely meet users’ different needs. The study used color and brightness as two independent variables to build up the experiment environment. The subjects’ feelings toward the lighting surroundings are dependent variables. Thirty adjective terms that had been selected beforehand were used in the lighting experiment. The result showed that the changes to brightness of lighting have little effect on subjects’ feelings, while the changes of the colors of the light have significant effect on subjects’ feelings. Red light tends to make subjects feel alert, and green light tends to make subjects feel gloomy, blue tends to bring cool feeling, and yellow light tends to bring lively, lighthearted feeling. Subjects feel most comfortable under yellow light and feel least comfortable under red light. The result showed by this study can be provided as an important reference for colored LED lighting. After knowing more about subjects’ feelings under different colored lighting, it’s easier to creat a lighting environment that fit different user needs.
