Abstract
Although the optical network can provide broad bandwidth and high speed for transmission, the scale of the network is also limited by the cost of technology. Therefore, it is necessarily considered to provide a high performance protocol with the scalability for the network based on a limited cost. In this thesis, we propose a predictive scheme using the locality property in the traffic to improve performance of the protocol. The considerations in the optical network about all of the critical issues, including transceiver tuning time, propagation delay, and processing time for dealing with control packets, are embedded in the predictive scheme. As a result, the proposed scheme can efficiently relieve the bottlenecks caused by control signaling and electronics processing, and has the ability to support a great number of nodes suitable for metropolitan area networks. The performance evaluation results will show that the proposed scheme can achieve higher bandwidth efficiency and incur lower packet delay than those of the TDM and typical reservation schemes.
