Abstract

In the advent of 3C technology, projectors come in bulky and non-movable package design has gradually transformed into portable cellphone-size projectors. Contrast to fixing on the ceiling of conference halls, speech presenters can now willingly deliver a speech with the help of a micro-projector elsewhere. However, to reducing the size and weight, traditional light sources such as high-intensity discharge (HID) and ultra-high pressure mercury lamp (UHP) are no longer applicable to the projectors anymore. Although compact light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are readily available for projector today, the brightness and energy efficacy of LEDs are still insufficient. Especially under the restriction of volume, it is more difficult to manufacture optical components such as integrator, condenser, light valve panel. Most importantly, projectors in the market today only perform fairly on optical qualities such as optical transmission, illumination uniformity, and contrast ratio. This thesis is to focus on digital light processing (DLP) technology based on the use of commercial optics software so that a novel illumination system for the projector is established. Finally, prototype models have been built for experimental verifications.
