Abstract
The Flat Panel Display (FPD) industry is crucial to Taiwan,s continued economic prosperity. Along with the semiconductor industry, it has become one of the important industries in Taiwan. According to the forecast of output value in 2005 for the FPD industry, the goal of breaking one trillion dollars will not only be achieved successfully but also will be arrived earlier than government’s expectation. Furthermore, the total quantities of the panel output will run smoothly over Korea reaching the number one in the world. While we are grateful and proud of the success for the FPD industry, after all the works we did these years in Taiwan. The challenge we are still facing is that we are continuously relying on Japan to support the slim display panel for notebook computer and mobile communication products on high-end application. Some well-known worldwide branded mobile phone providers have already required having 0.3mm thickness Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) panel as one of the criteria to be their suppliers. By the prosperity of the development in mobile communication technology, the demand and desire of having “slim and light” electronic products to consumers is never end. To fulfill the demand and desire, almost all of the professional suppliers in their fields have started their research of reducing the weight of components and modules, but LCD panel seems the only area less progressive. And it has leaded us facing the uniqueness and necessity of the Glass Thinning technology in FPD industry. In this research, I am trying to evaluate the business opportunity and market demand about Glass Thinning in FPD field. At the same time, I will describe the developing process about this technology.
