Abstract
In the development of liquid crystal displays (LCDs), high manufacturing cost is a significant technical problem. Many solutions techniques can resolve the coat problem. Among these, cutting down the manufacturing coat of backlight modules is one of important issues currently considered by all the backlight module manufacturers. In this thesis, we proposed a new structure of edge-lighting backlight module for 17” LCD monitors to tentatively solve the cost problem. There are only three cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) in the proposed backlight module in contrast with four CCFLs needed by the conventional counterparts. We used a ray tracing simulation tool, TracePro, which can model different structures for the backlight module. These simulated results show that the new edge-lighting backlight module which we designed can achieve the same brightness as the conventional one. Henceforth, the proposed backlight module can at least save one CCFL and cut the manufacturing cost.
