Abstract
This thesis developed a feed forward voltage balancing control on controlling the DC bus voltages of a cascaded H-bridge multilevel converter. We use generic model to develop the control algorithm and use the developed algorithm to verify the power flow of H-bridge on cascaded H-bridge multilevel converter. The feed forward voltage balancing control is based on average power balancing (APB) and with proposed algorithm we can make all DC bus voltages on the converter reaching its target value as scheduled. In this thesis we will operate the cascaded H-bridge multilevel converter as a STATic synchronous COMpensator (STATCOM). Experimental waveforms show that the STATCOM prototype(DC bus voltage at 70-v, capacity is 1-kVA) with star configuration is having capability operated under inductive and capacitive mode.
