Abstract
In this paper, we propose and analyze a new media access control (MAC) protocol that can support various ATM traffics efficiently in wireless ATM network environment. Since wireless channel is error-prone and wireless bandwidth is scarce, it becomes an important issue to devise an appropriate MAC protocol to allocate limiting resources to each user efficiently as well as to meet the desired QoS of each connection. The aim of our MAC protocol is to reduce and bound the delay time of real time traffics while maintain the QoS requirements of other traffics. Besides, we also design an efficient scheduling algorithm that supports variable characteristics of VBR traffic well and allocates data slots fair. We use leaky bucket functionality in the base station (BS) to improve the performance and reduce the complexity of the scheduling algorithm. The simulation results show that our protocol has better performance both when the system is in low load and heavy load.
