Abstract

《三國志》 微言 敘事 陳壽 San Guo Zhi subtle Words narrative Chen Shou
Chen Shou wrote “San Guo Zhi” in Jin Dynasty which is very close to the period of San Guo. Therefore, “San Guo Zhi” was almost a contemporary history for the time and many people in “San Guo Zhi” or their descendants of were alive and in power at the time. How to describe the change of the dynasty and not offend the people in power was a big problem for Chen Shou because some history writers were killed for the sake of their writing in the age. Weiyan dayi (subtle words with significant meaning) is a style of Confucius's Chunqiu (Spring and Autumn Annals). It is employed to hide the details of history by writing obscurely, so the readers need to explore the texts and simulate the history situations to get the real meaning of the records of history. Chen Shou used the style to record some critical historical events and create the possibilities for multiple interpretations. Every reader can interpret the records according to his needs. This way can prevent to stimulate the people in power and can protect the written history and his life. The author tried to explain some subtle words of "San Guo Zhi" by understanding the environments of Chen Shou and hoped to get the real insights of "San Guo Zhi." The analyzed subtle words in this paper include the destiny, the kings, the ministers, the hermits and the replacement of the dynasties in "San Guo Zhi".
