Abstract
Decision makers are often annoyed by the highly turbulent environment when the time comes for making strategic choices. The key issue causing the environment to be so uncertain is owing to the rapid market and technological change. Therefore, before mastering the uncertainty, decision makers are trying to find out more about what can be known from what can’t. Professor Hugh Courtney recognizes that traditional strategy approaches do not work well in conditions of significant uncertainty. Then he provides a framework, with four levels of uncertainty, to get better understanding of the nature of uncertainty. The four levels of uncertainty are A clear enough future, Alternative futures, A range of futures, and True ambiguity. As we know, the wireless network industry is full of unpreditable factors. This paper intends to use Professor Courtney’s framework for identifying which of the level of uncertainty the wireless network industry corresponds to. In analyzing the uncertainty of the wireless network industry, this paper separates it into three segmentments, which are Wireless Personal Area Network, Wireless Local Area Network, and Wireless Metropolitan Area Network. Each of segmentments’ uncertainty is evaluated respectively. The results show that each of the segmentations belongs to the uncertainty of level three-A range of futures.
