Abstract
We experimentally demonstrated that second-harmonic generation yield due to a thick nonlinear crystal is sensitive to temporal phase of ultrashort pulses. The nonlinear crystal we used is a 5-cm-long, ~50GHz phase-matching full width at half maximum bandwidth periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide, provided by E. L. Ginzton Laboratory of Stanford University. The temporal phase was generated from self-phase modulation in a section of highly nonlinear fiber with 15 m long, group velocity dispersion parameters = 0.28 ps2/km and = 0.03 ps3/km, and Kerr nonlinear parameter =10 W-1/km, which is provided by Dr. Jin-Long Peng of Industrial Technology Research Institute. As a result, the narrowband second-harmonic generation yield is highly sensitive to the self-phase modulation induced temporal phase. Although we are not able to retrieve entire temporal phase of the ultrafast pulse base on our theory model, this result still could be useful in temporal chirp monitoring and ultrafast coherent communications.
