Abstract
Breast feeding used to be the dominant way to feed infants; however, as the number of employed women grows, breast feeding becomes more and more difficult for these mothers because of unfriendly working environment. To solve this problem, mothers usually use breast pumps to extract mother milk and preserve it in advance, for the nutrition benefit of mother milk is highly recommended. The most common breast pump on the market is the breast pump with only a vacuum pump to suck mother milk out of the breasts, and yet it has been found uncomfortable for some mothers, because it can not compress breast properly like infant oral movement, which describes the infants’ tongues compressing breasts while infants are sucking mother milk and is considered to be comfortable and efficient for most mothers. As a result, our purpose is to design a new breast pump with a simple-harmonic roller cam of which movement track and compress pressure will correspond to those of infant oral movement and a compatible breastshield which can compress breast with proper pressure. And our research had studied the contact pressure distribution on breast caused by the roller cam and the breastshield with FEM method, then examine our new design with these FEM results. Our results show that the stresses caused by the roller cam and the breastshield are between 94.744kPa and 473.721kPa, which is close to the pressure produced by baby’s tongue.
