In recent years, the emerging term of business transaction is M-commerce (Mobile Commerce), it enables the people to buy and pay for thing, to pay their bill or to make a bet via their cellular phone when on the move, anywhere and at any time. It will bring convenience and contribute to improve life quality of the people. In the future, cellular phone may be some other mobile devices, such as Portable Computers, Mobile Phone, PDA, …, etc., by people to do M-commerce. With rapid growth of the network, two parties conducting E-commerce and M-commerce through it do not see each other face to face, neither exchange any document hand to hand. But, when there is money transfer from a buyer to a seller, the accuracy and security of E-commerce and M-commerce are even more critical.The security problem of present E-commerce on internet has become more and more important. In order to let the business transaction in the internet be more security, the credit card organizations, VISA and MasterCard, proposed a system named Secure Electronic Transaction (SET) in 1996 to standardize the business transactions on the internet. Today, most internet transactions were finished by credit card and SET. However, the security of credit card is very poor nowadays and SET is inconvenient for frequently mobile consumers. It is a trend that the credit card will be replaced by smart card in the future because the high security and mobility of smart card. In addition, smart card has the abilities of arithmetic operation and storing, the capabilities of encryption and decryption, digital signature and even authentication can be done in the smart card. Therefore, this thesis will design a convenient and secure payment system for consumers by smart card.Through their combination of mobility and security, smart cards are playing an increasingly important role in the rapidly developing areas of e-commerce and online information services. The smart card organizations, OpenCard and MULTOS have separately proposed smart card framework. The framework of OpenCard provides for inter-operable smart cards solutions across many hardware and software platforms announced by an industry consortium. The framework of MULTOS provides high security architecture, co-residence of multiple, inter-operable, platform independent applications, dynamic remote loading and deletion of applications over the lifetime of a card. The goals of smart card organizations provided a more secure solution for business transaction.In this thesis, we have proposed a Java Card based consumer-oriented M-commerce payment system. The new generation smart card, Java Card, proposed by Sun Microsystems is used in our proposed system, and we adopt the benefits of java language and java card, to achieve an objective.
