The photon energy of microwave electromagnetic wave (300MHz~300GHz) is too low to break the chemical bond of DNA. However, does microwave affect the biological system? The biological effects of microwave are classified as thermal and non-thermal effects. The thermal effect due to the absorption energy of microwave would increase the temperature of organism. However, the mechanisms of non-thermal effect are still unknown. In this study, we would like to investigate the relationship between the DNA repair and the microwave exposure. We used H2O2 and g ray to induce the DNA damages of the NFsa cell. Then they were placed in the GTEM cell, a microwave exposure cavity, for different time period of microwave exposure (up to 4hrs) to investigate if the mechanism of DNA repair was affected by the present of microwave (2.45 GHz). The power density of exposure was 6.61mW/cm2 (continuous wave). After 4hrs the experiment and the sham exposure samples were placed in the incubator to incubate 24hrs (the DNA damages caused by H2O2) or 7 days (the DNA damages caused by g ray). The cell proliferation assay was used to measure the ratio of living cells. At this stage of the study, the results can not conclude whether the microwave will affect DNA repair as measured by cell proliferation assay.
